CUNY Peer Leaders is a program housed at the CUNY Graduate Center that welcomes 40 undergraduate students annually from across CUNY colleges. The program supports their leadership and mentorship skills, which they, in turn, use to create pathways for humanities-based scholarship with a core component on elements of self-care, wellness, and social justice.
WHO: CUNY Peer Leaders Program
WHAT: Is accepting applications for the 2024 – 2025 cohort.
WHEN: Apply ASAP. Deadline is by Friday, June 28, 2024
WHERE: Learn more about the CUNY Peer Leaders Program HERE
CUNY Peer Leaders develop a culminating project of their choice and create a portfolio of public writing pieces or other creative works on the program blog, with guidance from peers, staff, and faculty. While striving toward shared goals, they develop transferable skills such as collaboration, learning with and from others, identifying needs and resources, and building trust. These accomplishments prepare CUNY Peer Leaders for success as students during their time at CUNY and beyond.
We plan to have a hybrid program for the incoming 2024–2025 academic year cohort. CUNY Peer Leaders are required to attend biweekly meet-ups (hybrid) on Friday afternoons, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, as well as workshops and events designed to build community and leadership skills and support success in school and beyond. In addition, there is a day-long community building summer orientation in August, where students learn about important resources and acquire vital skills that will aid them in their service as a CUNY Peer Leader. Attending the orientation in person is mandatory unless you have extremely pertinent circumstances that require you to receive clearance from the program director in advance. There will also be a few cultural enrichment activities (such as trips to the Theater and/or a museum) that will be scheduled outside of these times.
Students will receive a stipend of $1,100 for their participation (divided into two payments in October 2024 and March 2025), as well as support for transportation and other modest funding opportunities for additional projects students may work on if circumstances permit.
All CUNY undergraduate students are welcome to apply by completing this online application form by Friday, June 28, 2024.
Past participants of the CUNY Peer Leaders are also welcome to apply for additional terms. Please note that payment for undocumented students is complicated; however, we are committed to equitably funding these students. If you are undocumented and selected as a CUNY Peer Leader, you will need to coordinate with us on payment and be aware that payment processes take longer.
