Alum Muhammad Deen Shares His CUNY BA Journey

Muhammad Deen is a 2023 graduate of the CUNY BA Program. In an alumni interview, Dean speaks about his journey to CUNY BA, how the program allowed him to maximize his intellectual curiosity and advocate for his education philosophy.

Degree Verification

On your job applications, resumes, graduate school applications, etc. you MUST identify that you have graduated from the CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Why is identifying CUNY BA important?

Because potential employers are likely to call to verify your college degree and if you write that you received your degree from “Brooklyn College” or “Hunter College,” that college will receive the call and they will NOT verify your degree because that college did not confer it.

Upon graduation, your degree is conferred by the CUNY BA under the auspices of the Graduate Center.

Employers or agencies who need to verify your degree should contact the CUNY BA's Registrar's Office directly at (212) 817-8227. They can also email authorized verification requests to CUNY BA at registrar@cunyba.cuny.edu.

How you might indicate your degree on resumes, job applications, etc:

Degree (B.A. or B.S.), Graduation Date, Title(s) of Area of Concentration, CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (Home College: xyz College), any Honors received.

So, if Jane Doe graduated “cum laude” in January 2017 with a B.S. in Nonprofit Accounting while she was at Baruch, her resume might look like this:

B.S., Nonprofit Accounting, January 2017, CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (at Baruch College), cum laude
or
B.S., cum laude, Nonprofit Accounting, January 2017, CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies / Home College: Baruch College

Finally, note that we have three different graduation dates each year (September, January, June) so be sure you have the correct month on your records.

For graduate school applications (other than law, medical, dental schools), please use the Program’s College Board (CEEB) code: 2479, to indicate the CUNY Baccalaureate Program.

Diplomas

Degrees are granted three times a year, on January 31st, June 30th, and September 1st.

Beginning in 2021, when students officially graduate, they will receive an email about two weeks later with a link where they can download an electronic copy of their diploma. Soon after, they will receive tracking information for their printed diploma, which is mailed to the home address on record in CUNYfirst. Diplomas are not available for pickup in our office.

Diplomas issued before 2020: The program office keeps diplomas for all students who did not pick theirs up, dating back to the beginning of the program—so you can still get yours by contacting us at 212.817.8221 to confirm our office hours, and then planning to come in for it.

Students can arrange to have their diploma mailed to them as follows:

Statement Letter: Notify the CUNY Baccalaureate Registrar in writing, that you give permission for your diploma to be mailed to you and that you take full responsibility for the condition of its receipt. Please be sure to print your full name, sign and date the letter/email.
Envelope: Send a self-addressed and stamped envelope (United States Post Office only). Note that the diploma size is 16" x 13" and weighs less than 1 lb.

Again, remember that the program is not responsible for your diploma if it is lost or damaged in the mail should you choose this option.

Replacement Diplomas

If you lose or damage your diploma, you can request a new one through Parchment (the same system used to request transcripts). There is a $30 fee for replacement diplomas, payable through Parchment.

Transcripts

CUNY Baccalaureate maintains the official undergraduate academic record for its students; accordingly, the transcript should be ordered through our (CUNY BA) office.

Please note that requests may not be filled if there are any holds on your record. Be sure to clear holds prior to requesting a transcript.

Please be sure to make any requests using the name under which you were enrolled.

CUNY Baccalaureate provides a service that allows students to request transcripts online:
* If you are a current or former CUNY BA student with a CUNYfirst account, click here to get started.
* If you are a former CUNY BA student without a CUNYfirst account, click here to get started.
Electronic and paper hard-copy transcripts are available. Transcripts can be requested 24/7. Once received, transcript requests are processed in 3-5 business days.
Each transcript has a fee, except for those sent to another CUNY college, which are sent at no charge.

Most graduate schools require you to submit not only your CUNY Baccalaureate transcript, which shows that you earned a degree but also original transcripts from every CUNY and non-CUNY college you attended prior to attending CUNY BA, even when those credits are reflected on the CUNY Baccalaureate transcript. Students are expected to find out exactly what documents graduate schools they are applying to require for admission.

If your employer needs to verify your graduation date and degree only, they may email the CUNY Baccalaureate Registrar’s Office at registrar@cunyba.cuny.edu.
