Funding Your Study Abroad Experience

Studying abroad may be more affordable than you think. Many CUNY BA students combine financial aid, scholarships, grants, and personal funding to help cover program costs. We encourage students to begin researching funding opportunities early, as many scholarship deadlines occur six to twelve months before departure.

  • Meet with your CUNY BA advisor and home college study abroad office.
  • Confirm how your financial aid can be applied to your study abroad program.
  • Research program costs and create a budget.
  • Review scholarship deadlines well in advance.

Scholarships for Students with Financial Need

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship is one of the most popular study abroad scholarships for undergraduate students with financial need. The program supports U.S. citizen undergraduate students who receive a Federal Pell Grant and are participating in credit-bearing study abroad or international internship programs.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)

FEA provides scholarships to students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including first-generation college students, community college students, and students with demonstrated financial need.

Freeman-ASIA

Freeman-ASIA provides need-based funding for students studying in East or Southeast Asia. Awards may be used toward program costs, airfare, housing, transportation, and other study abroad expenses.

 

Language and Regional Scholarships

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded summer language immersion program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Languages include Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Russian, Turkish, Urdu, and others.

Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships support intensive language and cultural study in regions of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. Recipients commit to a period of federal service after graduation.

 

Bridging Scholarship

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to undergraduate students participating in semester- or year-long study abroad programs in Japan.

 

Funding Through Your Home College

Some CUNY colleges offer their own study abroad scholarships and travel grants. Students should consult:

Students planning international study, research, or teaching after graduation may wish to explore:

    These highly competitive programs support graduate study, research, teaching, and professional experiences abroad. Most are intended for graduating seniors, recent alumni, and graduate students.
