2025 Velay Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (VSURF)

Woman working in science labThe Velay Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (VSURF) program is a ten-week, summer research and professional development experience for undergraduates in STEM.

Accepted students are paired with a mentor from one of the five research initiatives at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center. Participants complete a project plan developed in collaboration with their mentors, attend weekly professional development workshops, and create a presentation of their research project for their peers, mentors, and family/friends.

This is an opportunity for sophomore- and junior-level students to gain transformational, multidisciplinary experiences and professional tools that will enable them to pursue graduate degrees and careers in the sciences. Velay Fellows will receive a $5,000 stipend.

Special Note: The program recognizes that in the field of STEM demographic disparities have existed and continue to exist.  The program is intended to increase STEM participation overall, but with a particular emphasis on addressing those disparities especially regarding the underrepresentation of women.  All CUNY sophomore or junior undergraduates who are interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics are welcome and encouraged to apply.
