CUNY BA Pipeline with Masters in Liberal Studies (MALS)

CUNY BA and the CUNY Graduate Center are pleased to offer a new opportunity to CUNY BA students.

CUNY BA students who are in good standing and have interests in graduate study in the humanities and social sciences may, in their junior year, apply and be provisionally accepted to the CUNY Graduate Center’s M.A. in Liberal Studies (MALS) Program .

Accepted students will be permitted to take up to 12 credits towards the M.A. degree during their last three semesters at CUNY BA, allowing them to complete the remaining 18 credits and the MA degree in just one year after the bachelor’s degree..

The application does not require the GRE or any standardized test scores.

What can I study in the MALS Program?

The M.A. in Liberal Studies Program is a thirty-credit interdisciplinary degree program that allows students to design and pursue individual courses of study at the Graduate Center, CUNY.

Where are the MALS classes held?

MALS classes are held at the CUNY Graduate Center, on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue (across from the Empire State Building) in Manhattan.

Is there an application fee?

The usual MALS application fee of $125 will be waived for CUNY BA students who attend one of the information sessions.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications and all related materials (including letters of recommendation) must be received by November 1.

What kind of classes can I take?

In addition to the MALS classes for a student’s specific program, MALS students are also permitted to take doctoral-level courses at the CUNY Graduate Center, from some of the nation’s leading faculty in a range of disciplines.

What does it take to apply?

MALS requires a current unofficial transcript (from CUNYFirst), two letters of recommendation and a personal statement. The application does not require the GRE or any other test score, and for CUNY BA students who attend an information session (schedule is here), the application fee of $125 will be waived.
